THE CITY OF THANJAVUR

  Known for green pastures & lush paddy fields, Thanjavur district is called the 'Granary of India.'

The landmarks of the town are

  the BIG Temple (Sri Brahadeeswarar Temple), an architectural marvel, built (985-1012AD) by great Chola King Raja Raja I. Declared as World Heritage Monument by UNESCO.
  Saraswathi Mahal Library, the library of the Royal Dynasty and now a Public Library, is one of the very few in the world with texts of the medieval period. Encyclopedia Britannica describes this as "the most remarkable library of India."
  Famed as the home of Carnatic music (the south Indian classical music), musical instruments, dance and traditional handicrafts - the famous Thanjavur plate.
